Mask Etiquette

We really seem to need rules for this mask thing. Most people seem to be playing along, but there are always a few. The thing is, there are no consequences.

Before we get sidetracked into people thinking this is a political issue, it’s not. It’s a health issue. I’m not wearing a mask because it might keep me from getting sick. I’m wearing it because it might help others from getting sick. I would not feel right about causing sickness in others if there is a simple way to avoid it. And there is.

There are people who say they can’t wear a mask. Some of them are actually correct. Many just think they can’t wear them and just don’t want to. There is a difference between not wanting to and not being able to. But I still see quite a few people wandering around without masks.

Unfortunately, it seems many stores will not challenge people. I can see why. They don’t want their employees getting in a fight with some person who thinks they are entitled to spread disease. But that’s just leaving the situation without consequences for those who choose to be selfish.

Really, this seems to be the one big problem with many of the Covid regulations. No consequences.

People coming in to the province have to isolate for fourteen days. Except there is no tracking or follow-up to make sure that happens.

People are required to wear a face mask in indoor public spaces. Except if you don’t, nothing happens to you. You are still able to go about your life as usual.

So we’re left with the honour system. Thankfully, most of us seem inclined to do what we are asked.
