The Spiders Have Won

What insect, bird, reptile, fish, amphibian, mammal terrifies you the most? I don’t have a problem with snakes or June bugs like many people. I’m fairly calm about ticks.

I used to be terrified of spiders but the last few years I’ve grown used to them.

First, I spent two days under my house in the crawlspace fixing some things and this place was spider central. (Spider tip – it’s better to be in a spider infested area in summer, as they will all be outside catching food. In the fall and winter, they are all inside. )

Secondly, I start my day by navigating through some hanging Wisteria branches that always have a spider web (and large spider) attached. So before I get in the car I’m brushing the web and sometimes the spider off me.

They’ve won. I now accept them as part of my world.

What does terrify me? Bears. I came face to face with one who was almost fully grown physically, but still a dumb adolescent mentally. In other words, he hadn’t learned to stay away from humans. Once I was a safe distance from him, I tried everything to scare him off the property and away from my composter, but he wasn’t fazed in the least.

Some of my neighbours had run ins in their backyards with the same bear, and he charged at a couple of them.

To this day, I check my backyard for bears before I or the dog venture into it.
