Fibre Op Internet Now Available In North, Central Queens

Work to connect a number of areas left without reliable Internet in Queens County is now complete.

The Region of Queens says over 2,100 properties in Central and North Queens are now ready to be connected with high-speed fibre Internet.

Bell Aliant, who is providing the service, is now looking at getting interested costumers connected.

“They’ve been laying the fibre optic cable on the poles now for most of the Spring and Summer,” said David Dagley, mayor of Region of Queens.

“Now they are getting to a point where they’re looking to book the residents interested and they will start that list and produce a work order to get them connected.”

Communities ready to connect include Caledonia, portions of West Caledonia, Westfield, Harmony Mills, Greenfield, Lebelle and Buckfield.

Some of the areas receiving the new service only had sub-par internet beforehand, if any.

“I have friends in North Queens that if I send them an email with maybe five lines of text, it can take some of them multiple minutes just to download that ordinary email,” said Dagley.

“So that internet is really not functioning or usable for any other issues the province or federal government would like residents to avail themselves of.”

These upgrades follow the first phase of Bell Canada’s ““Fibre to the Home Footprint Expansion” which began in February. Funding for said expansion came from Develop NS, the province, and a $435,500 from the Region of Queens.

Dagley expects another 74 premises will have the service available to them in the coming weeks.

The Region of Queens recommends anyone in the affected communities interested in the high-speed service to contact Bell Aliant, visit them online or drop in to a Bell Aliant store.
