Spiders – Hate ‘Em Or Like ‘Em?

It’s that time of year. Spiders seem to be everywhere. Mostly on the outside of our windows, so we can see them waving in the breeze, gazing into our homes with longing.

I know. A lot of people hate spiders. I am not one of those people. I actually kind of like them. They eat insects I don’t particularly like, any they pretty much keep to themselves.

We’re pretty lucky in Nova Scotia. We don’t have spiders that will try to kill you. That doesn’t mean you can’t come across a hitchhiker from another part of the world who is bent on destruction, but most of the native spiders are easy to get along with.

But I will admit, I’m one of those people who will try not to kill a spider. Instead, I will try to move them elsewhere, although as the weather continues to cool down it does reach a point where relocating them outside and killing them are pretty close to the same thing. But I like to give them a chance.

This time of year, there seems to be more than a few of them who would like to get inside. On a day like today, that’s pretty easy to understand. And as long as they keep out of site I don’t have a problem sharing my space with them.

I know others who have had run-ins with spiders. They may not be overly venomous around here, but they can still give a nasty bite when they want to. So I can understand those who don’t want them around. As long as they don’t get too pushy, I’m good having them around… in limited numbers.
