When I first moved to the South Shore 20 years ago I noticed a common Thanksgiving tradition I had never heard of in my life – (but that’s not a surprise being a city boy originally) Many families head to their camp or cottage to cook the Thanksgiving dinner. I’m sure it’s a pain to haul all the kitchen gear and food to the cottage but it must be really beautiful to be out in the woods when the leaves are changing and autumn is all around. I wonder, is that the reason for the camp/cottage celebration?
I can only think of two Thanksgiving traditions in my family growing up – First, Dad was old school about having the bird stuffed as opposed to making dressing in a casserole dish. I;ve since learned it makes absolutely no difference in the taste of the stuffing or dressing.
And two, the dressing was bread-based. I’ve since tried so many different stuffings and dressings and wonder why anyone would limit themselves to just one kind.
What’s your family’s Thanksgiving tradition? And do you still follow it?
