Municipal Elections are on the way. Early voting has started in many places.
In a way, I feel bad for those running for municipal office. They spend several weeks trying to campaign, which this year has been even more challenging, and too many of us don’t pay attention. Turnout for municipal elections has historically been pretty low.
For most of us, unless we have something that is really bothering us… like maybe a giant pothole right at the end of our driveway or something… there isn’t a lot about municipal politics that gets us excited.
But even though we may find the things they deal with kind of boring ourselves, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t pay attention. Maybe we don’t care what pothole gets filled right away or where stuff goes when we flush, but at some point, it may be really important. So maybe we should pay attention before then.
Municipal politics is not party politics. We are picking those we think will do the best for us, so we should try to do that.
And as I was always told as a child, if you don’t vote, you have no right to complain. And who doesn’t like to complain now and then?
