I will admit, I was starting to get a bit nervous. Over the past few years, I have done much of my Christmas shopping at craft sales and markets.
There are a number of reasons for this. You can support local business and get some unique items being tops amoung them. I like the atmosphere and the fact you can often get to chat with the person who actually made the item. And I like the idea of not just mindlessly buying a lot of things we don’t need.
Not that I don’t do that at times. I can still wander through the halls of rampant consumerism with the best of them. But I feel better about coming across some small item that seems somehow symbolic of the person I am buying it for. That’s why I like the craft fairs. You can find that sort of thing.
I was a bit concerned many might not happen this year, but it seems some are popping up. Which is great, in my mind.
Sure, if I was really into this sort of thing I would be trying to make some of these items myself. But I am smart enough to know I don’t have time. Or possibly the talent. Or in some cases the ability to grow limbs back after I accidentally lop them off in an attempt to make something. So the craft fair is far less dangerous a place for someone like me.
And you find some cool stuff, too.
