The day has finally come – The Cormorant is leaving Bridgewater this week.
After working to prepare the ship for its voyage to its final resting place over the last month, Jane Deeks, press secretary for minister Bernadette Jordan’s office confirmed the derelict ship will be towed from the Bridgewater Port Friday morning.
Bernadette Jordan, minister of Oceans, Fisheries and the Canadian Coast Guard will be onsite to mark the removal of the boat, something she has made a focus since announcing the federal government’s initial intent to begin work on the removal of the ship in June 2019.
The former naval vessel has sat in Bridgewater rotting since 2000 and even sank in the LaHave River at one point. During that time, ownership of the vessel has been tied up in legal battles between the federal government, an unnamed US company and the Bridgewater Port.
Destined to be deconstructed and destroyed by RJ MacIsaac Construction LTD., the ship will begin its voyage at 6 AM Friday morning.
