I was lucky growing up, because my mother figured out very early that my brother and I would not eat certain things. There weren’t many, but she knew it was futile to cook those things and put them on our plate.
So there wasn’t a lot of drama in our house at mealtimes, except for that year my younger brother became the “first” vegetarian and refused to eat any meat except baloney.
Even when my father came back from navy trips overseas and would have a new favourite thing, I still liked the food and ate it without complaint. I was exposed to Indian food, British cuisine, southern USA Cajun, Caribbean dishes and more.
I even grew to like “smoked kippers” for Saturday morning breakfast while mom opened every window in the house (even in January) to air the place out.
There was one thing that I just couldn’t eat, but thank goodness it was only served once a year at Christmas dinner. For some odd reason, it’s a British tradition to have Brussels Sprouts with Christmas dinner. I have no idea why I don’t like those ugly little green micro-cabbages because I love full size cabbage, coleslaw, cabbage rolls, cabbage anything!
To this day, I can handle a half a Brussels sprout. It’s not pleasant but I can eat half of one without making a face.
What family meal did you absolutely hate as a kid? And do you still refuse to eat it or have your taste buds gotten used to it?
