The Municipality of Chester (MOC) is trying to find someone who can handle animal control issues around the region.
A tender was issued recently outlining what they are looking for in potential candidates.
According to the tender, they require an organization that can respond to the following types of calls:
- Stray, lost, or abandoned dogs

- Dogs found to be running at large
- Dogs not wearing a tag
- Dogs that are fierce or dangerous
- Dogs that are rabid, or appear to be rabid or exhibit symptoms of canine madness
- Dogs that persistently disturb the quiet of the neighborhood
- Any domestic animal or fowl (noise, at large, etc.)
- Any livestock (noise, at large, inadequate fencing, etc.)
- Any other animal control related complaints that may be received from any member of the
public, organization, or body
The successful applicant may also be responsible for responding to calls in the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg (MODL) as the tender says the MOC may enter a contract with the MODL in the future to share animal control services.
When data was last reported (2018-2019) the MOC had 79 animal control calls while the MODL had 151.
Anyone wanting to submit an application is required to provide a monthly fee for both the MOC and the MODL, with the expectation that the same rate would be used over a 5-year contract.
Assuming a successful applicant is found, the MOC hopes to have the new animal control operator up and running by February 2021.
