I’m all for finding new ways to do things that make life easier. You seem them pop up all the time, usually labelled as “life hacks” or something like that. I don’t think there is really much hacking involved in most of these, but some do provide us with some interesting ideas.
Like I saw one about using a post-it note to catch dust when drilling a hole. I don’t go around drilling a lot of holes, but for those I do drill, I often forget the cleaning up process. So taking a post-it note, folding it then sticking it to the wall just below where you are about to drill so any dust falls into the fold in the post-it seems like a great idea. Provided you can lay your hands on a post-it. Quite often, it would take far longer to locate a post-it than to just drill the hole and cleaning up. But it is a neat idea.
One I came across the other day had me scratching my head a bit. It came in the form of a seemingly viral Tik Tok video. No dancing involved or anything like that. Just a woman who claimed we are using our pasta strainers all wrong. She then proceeds to take her strainer and put it into the pot with the cooked pasta, then drains the pasta while using the strainer to hold the pasta in the pot.
A few people pointed out that this will only really work if you have a strainer that is the right size to just fit inside the pot you are using. My strainer does not do that, so it probably wouldn’t work very well.
And I can’t see how this saves any great amount of time or effort.
Yes… if you aren’t careful. doing it the usual way can lead to a sink full of pasta, but that is a rare occurrence, at least around my house. But I can use any size pot with my strainer and it will still work.
My search for new so called “hacks” will continue. But not all of them make sense.
