Very slowly, the sun has been hanging around a bit longer. At first, you don’t notice. At least not a lot.
While it used to be dark at 5:00 PM, that becomes 5:15. Then 5:30. Suddenly, the sun is hanging around until 6:00 PM or better and you start to notice the world is not quite so dark anymore.
It’s one of those things that makes you smile a bit and maybe even a little hopeful. Soon the world will start to warm up a bit. We won’t need to have lights on for most of the day. And there may even come a day when we can turn the heat back a bit.
Although we still have that one thing to go through… the time change. It’s only a couple weeks away. In just a couple short weeks it will suddenly be staying light until 7:00 PM and even later.
The time change is one of those things that I can never quite understand. Our lifestyles have changed quite a bit since those times were set. Staying on Daylight Savings Time would probably make the most sense, giving us more daylight in the evenings, but our politicians don’t seem to want to do much about the subject.
And the Daylight Savings Time part only makes sense from a lifestyle standpoint. There are quite a few sleep experts who will swear that those hours don’t fit our natural rhythms, and we should actually all be on standard time.
There have been some half hearted attempts to change the way we do time. A couple jurisdictions have passed “me too” bills about the time change. Basically saying that if someone else ever gets around to changing, they will change too. But no one seems to want to be first.
Even though the majority of people would like to just stop this changing time twice a year, politicians don’t seem to want to actually do something about it. There has to be a reason they refuse to do what would be a fairly simple thing to make a lot of people happy. And if there’s a reason something isn’t being done, there is probably money involved.
So we’ll probably just keep switching time twice a year for no real reason.
In the meantime, I’ll just keep smiling about the fact the sun is hanging around a bot longer each day. That part makes me happy.
