The Right Vaccine

For the first time in many years, I’m glad I’m old. Not really old, but moderately old. Old enough to make it to the vaccine list.

In some ways, it’s a bit daunting. Knowing you’ve hit that point in your life. Like the first time you are offered a seniors discount. Just before you start to yell at the world that you’re not that old you suddenly think, “wait… ten percent off… damn right I’m old. I’m older than dirt if you’re giving me a discount.”

It was similar when I got my vaccine appointment. I was looking for an appointment for my mother when I noticed the one for 63 and 64 year olds. After a brief period of trying to deny to myself that I really am in that age bracket, I booked an appointment for myself.

There was also a bit of doubt about the vaccine I was about to get. You know, the thing about possible blood clots, discussion over whether or not it works as well as the others. But when you get past all that and figure out it can very likely prevent a person from dying of the disease, that’s really the only fact I needed to know.

Sure, maybe Bill Gates can track me now. But outside of learning all my favourite fishing spots I don’t know why he’d want to. I was pretty boring before and over the past year it’s only gotten worse. If he really wants to know where I am, he just has to ask.

The thing is, I really don’t see much of a down side, and I don’t think I’m alone. I asked if they had any issues with people having second thoughts and not showing up. Nope. One hundred percent of bookings are there, on time. Seems like a lot of us just want to get this over with.

It doesn’t mean you can toss your mask away and start flying to global hot spots. You still have to take precautions. And it takes while for this to kick in. But that’s okay. Just knowing there is less of a chance of this thing killing you makes you feel a bit better.
