Aggravated assault prompted hospital lockdowns; young girl airlifted to Halifax

The RCMP’s major crime unit is leading the investigation in relation to an incident which led to the lockdown of two hospitals in Lunenburg county.

Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg and the South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater were both under lockdown orders last Friday.

RCMP confirm they are investigating an aggravated assault which prompted the lockdowns.

Police say a two-year-old girl had sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted from Bridgewater to the IWK hospital in Halifax.

The child required emergency treatment for her injuries at the IWK ICU.

RCMP spokesperson Chris Marshall says there was no threat to the public as those involved knew each other.

A heavy police presence was visible at both hospitals and residents report not being able to enter either hospital for a short time on Friday morning. In addition, a LifeFlight helicopter could be seen taking off from the hospital in Bridgewater just before lunch that day.

Marshall adds investigators are still collecting evidence and the investigation is ongoing.

No arrests have been made.
