I usually pay more attention. Generally, by the time the Academy Awards roll around, if I haven’t actually seen some of nominees I have at least heard of them.
This past year was different. For a lot of us. I just didn’t pay much attention. There were other things that were demanding attention and movies were pretty far down the list. For a good part of the year there were no theatres showing the movies. And I really don’t have the time or desire to pay attention to what is popping up on the seventy-three different streaming services that I really don’t want to get. (At least it seems like that many some days.)
So I pretty much ignored what was going on with movies over the past year. Which means I also have been ignoring the awards that go along with them.
To be honest, this has been something that has been slowly happening over many years when it comes to award shows. There are just too many awards I don’t care about. I know they are for things that are very important to the industry, but I really don’t care who is the best costume designer and cinematographer. Again, I know they are important to the end product, but I’m not involved in the details of the movie industry. I really only want to know the three or four big award winners.
So you can cut a three hour award show down to about a half hour for me. And I’d probably still disagree with the choice of winners. But I have hit a point that life is too short to spend that much time watching something I really don’t care about.
And then add in the fact that this past year I had no idea what movies were even out there.
Looking through the list of winners, there are a couple movies I may have to check out at some point. There are some actors that I enjoy their work, so I might have to check out what they did. But it’s not overly high on my priority list.
So I totally skipped the show this year. I guess I wasn’t the only one. They say ratings were way down from previous years. I guess maybe a lot of us had other things on our mind over the past year.
