BCAF Praises Commitment To Eliminating Straight Pipes

The executive director of the Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation says their biggest win this year was getting three levels of government to recognize straight pipes as an issue.

Brooke Nodding says the problem in the Lahave River has been ongoing for at least 10 years.

However, the work by Stella Bowles and her science project got municipal, provincial and federal governments talking and working together.

She says recent water testing results of the river aren’t terrible.

“We’re right in that moderate range in terms of Canadian rivers. So, it’s not great but it’s not awful.”

She says the group has learned about high levels of nutrients in the river around West Northfield, sewage and is working with the Municipality of Lunenburg on storm-water management.

Nodding has spent the last few weeks raising awareness of BCAF to new councillors in Lunenburg County.

She says the group is branching out on projects in Queens, Shelburne and Yarmouth counties.
