I Do Not Like Them

There has been a recipe going around online for the past couple weeks. I suppose it is a limited time for ingredients. And it is the season. And I know the insect eating thing seems to be all the rage. But I don’t think I could with this one.

My dog seems to like them. And they are crunchy. At least when she eats them. Yes… I’m talking June bugs.

If you are what you eat, that should be enough to stop you from trying to devour these things. They fly, but don’t seem to be very good at it. They get focused on light and keep trying to fly toward it. Although they seem to be one of those things that are not overly well designed. Lifting off seems to happen but then they wander around bumping into things at random until they finally just fall down somewhere.

But there is this recipe. You need a dozen fresh live June bugs. There are nights when they seem to be pretty plentiful, but finding a dozen might be a bit of a stretch. But that’s what is called for. You take a bit of olive oil, put it in a skillet, add June bugs, a bit of salt and some chili powder (about a half teaspoon of each), sautee for about five minutes or until crunchy.

You would have to think they would already be crunchy, but I think you would want to cook them well. At least until they stop moving.

I’m usually all for snacks. I like snacks. But I’m not sure I could do June bugs. One thing would be the wings and legs. Having bugs legs stuck in your teeth all day would be a bit… wrong?

They would have a bit of a kick with the chili powder, but I’m thinking a bit of hot sauce wouldn’t go astray. Like perhaps a whole bottle.

I like to think I’m open to new things, but I think this just goes a bit beyond. I’m not against insects. Cricket powder sounds like an interesting protein source, but it doesn’t sill have legs and wings attached.

I’ve certainly eaten my fair share of black flies over the years. probably a few other that have made it into my mouth in one way or another. But I just don’t find June bugs appetizing. And there is not enough spice in the world to change that.

The good news is, my dog’s snacks are safe.
