Fire Destroys Martins River Home

A couple in their 70’s has lost their home after a fire yesterday in Martins River.

The Martins River Fire Department received the call shortly before 5:30pm about a garage fire on Shingle Mill Road which quickly spread to the nearby mobile home.

Fire departments including Mahone Bay, Blockhouse, Western Shore, Chester Basin, Chester, Lunenburg and Oakhill were called to the scene to assist.

The couple’s daughter, Kerry Dorey-Bryan said that although the house is still standing, the damage is extensive.

She explained that the home has been left uninhabitable and the garage, her fathers tractor and many other items are a total loss.

Dorey-Bryan added that her parents have lived in that home for over 50 years.

“My dad still hasn’t gone up to look at what’s happened, but my mom has been inside and picked out a few things that were special to them,” said Dorey-Bryan.

Dorey-Bryan says she’s grateful to all of the firefighters that responded.

“They volunteer their time so I just really want to thank them and I’m thankful that they made it out ok,” said Dorey-Bryan.

No injuries were sustained during the fire.

The couple is being assisted by the Canadian Red Cross, and a GoFundMe has been set up by family.
