Fall will soon be here. Or is here. It’s that close. Fall will be here today.
For many of us, the change of seasons can also bring a bit of a change in diet. Fall just seems to be a time for comfort food.
Now officially, comfort food should probably be something you grew up with. A food that makes you think of home as soon as you smell it. Or maybe something that just makes you feel good. Maybe something that warms you both inside and out.
Things like soups and stews could be comfort food. Or it could be something as simple as a grilled cheese with a bowl of tomato soup. That food that makes you feel good as soon as you think about it.
For me, things like homemade soup, stews and chili certainly tick those boxes. So do a number of other foods. Extended family dinners were not unusual with us, so things like casseroles and desserts also spring to mind.
Over the years some of those recipes may have changed slightly. I may be guilty of spicing things up a bit. I could be accused of trying to change things that don’t need changing, but I tend to look at it as just presenting other options. I have been known to take a stew or a pot roast and throw in various herbs and spices, just to make it a bit different.
I’m not sure if that truly qualifies as “comfort food”, but it works for me. And now that my children have grown up with it, it would qualify for them.
So the definition of comfort food can change from person to person and maybe even change over time. As long as it makes you feel good, that’s what really counts.
