Cape Negro To Be Renamed By Next Year

Service Nova Scotia Minister Colton LeBlanc says work is well underway towards renaming some communities in Shelburne County that have names deemed to be inappropriate.

The locations set to be renamed include Cape Negro and Negro Island and the province says they are looking into other areas that contain the term negro or squaw in their names.

LeBlanc says the process of changing an official name is quite laborious but they are now in the final stages.

A list of suitable replacement names has been submitted to the province and the next step is for the community to have input on the names put forward.

Once that’s complete the Municipal Government will have to sign off on a few documents to make things official.

LeBlanc says we can expect the new names to be announced in the early part of 2023.
