Here Come The Tele-Docs

I got my invitation last week. The invitation to join the new provincial on-line medical service.

I haven’t completely looked into it yet, but I intend to do so soon. As one of the… what is it now… eighty thousand that are without a family doctor, the thought of spending hours at out patients to get a prescription renewed doesn’t really appeal to me.

Although going to doctors has seemed to be one of those things that has started to be a bit more important. Lately, they seem to keep finding things. Or maybe discovering that my past is catching up with me would be a better description. You know… you don’t eat the right things, you need more sleep, your blood sugar is out of whack… the list could go on.

One could argue that I was just fine until the doctor found bunches of things wrong with me, but that’s not exactly how it works. As I mentioned, a lot of this is just my past catching up with me. Time to start paying a bit more attention to my health.

But that’s tough to do without a doctor to sit and talk to about these things.

The idea of being able to talk to someone on the computer seems like a good idea. I have not yet looked into what all you need. I suppose things like a microphone and web camera would come in handy, neither of which I have hooked up at the moment. So I’ll have to chase those down, I suppose.

But the idea of showing a complete stranger online parts of your body and saying things like, “Does this rash look serious?” is somehow appealing. It makes it seem less real in some ways. And it’s the internet. So who knows what you’re actually showing to who.

Anyway, it’s worth a try. I do hope they find real people to fill positions some day. In the meantime, this will likely be better than clogging up out patients.
