Health Canada says of all the technology in your home your cell phone and its accessories are the most likely to start a fire.
New data released this week shows cell phones and accessories have caused 183 fires in Canada over the past five years.
Thermostats were ranked second on the list with 104 fires and laptops, tablets and computers ranked third with 74 fires.
Nova Scotia Fire Marshall Doug MacKenzie says the number one thing to watch out for with your phones is the charging cables, “They could be frayed or damaged which can lead to an electrical fire,” Mackenzie said.
He says if you notice any fraying you should look to replace the cable as quickly as possible.
MacKenzie also recommends storing your phone on a hard stable surface as opposed to on a bed or sofa, “If it’s left on a blanket or gets wrapped up all it takes is a little spill of water then it could overheat.”
When looking to replace aging cables it’s also important to pick reputable companies. According to MacKenzie many manufacturers around the world do not follow Canada’s safety regulations. He recommends ensuring any devices or accessories you’re considering for purchase are certified by Canadian agencies.
Look for products with badges that say; CSA, cUL, or cETL, before purchasing electrical products that plug into an electrical outlet. These marks indicate that the products are assessed and conform to the required Canadian national safety standard.
