Displaced Antigonish residents urged to register with Red Cross

Approximately 25 people have registered with the Red Cross after flood water submerged a Trailer Court in Antigonish during Tuesday’s storm.

They were housed at the Antigonish Farmer’s Market building overnight.

The town is aware that some people from the community opted to stay with friends or family last night, spokesperson for the Town of Antigonish, Kate Gorman said.

“Today, we’re urging those people to check in with the red cross so that we have their information so that we’ll be able to share information on next steps directly with them,” she said.

Municipal officials are meeting with a representative of the emergency management office today to determine how to best help displaced people.

Town infrastructure, such as bridges and roads, are stable, Gorman said. But people are being encouraged to avoid flooded areas due to safety concerns.

Several organizations and businesses have stepped up to help out, with Antigonish County Rescue, Antigonish Farmer’s Market offering their space as temporary lodging and several other local businesses donating pet items and toiletries.

“The town is very grateful and it’s amazing to see those people come together when it was needed the most.”

The Red Cross are no longer on-site at the farmer’s market.

Anyone who needs to register with the Red Cross can contact the RCMP to be connected.
