Barrington Council Requests More Public Consultation On Place Names

The process to change derogatory place names in Shelburne County is expected to be completed in the new year.

The province is leading the way on the initiative, that would change the name of Cape Negro and the Island, Harbour and Point that bear the name.

The Municipality of Barrington have asked for an extension on public consultation.

Warden Eddie Nickerson says residents have expressed their concerns.

“Some people haven’t received letters, or haven’t had the opportunity to respond. Hopefully the province will look favourably on that, and allow those residents to express their concerns,” says Nickerson.

The municipality is requesting to move the deadline for public consultations to the end of February.

Nickerson says it’s important for residents to have their input on the name changes.

Earlier this fall, the province said they’ve shortlisted some potential new names, after asking for submissions over the summer from the public.
