The Christmas Drive

It seemed like the perfect time. Fresh snow on the ground and on the trees. A lovely night, just before Christmas. It was time for “The Drive”.

I’m sure many of you do the same. We’ve been doing it for years. Pack everyone in the car and go for a drive to look at the Christmas lights.

It looked pretty nice last night. The snow really set it off. In some cases, you could see the lights peeking out from under the snow on bushes and trees. And there were quite a few very nice light displays.

The route changes a bit from year to year. Some places that used to decorate quite extensively don’t anymore. Others have stepped in to take their place. And some are just beginning. It’s fun to watch them start, putting up a few decorations one year and adding to them as they go.

My mother, who has done this annual journey for… let’s say several decades… declared it one of the best yet. It think it may have been the combination of the lights and the fresh snow. And it did look pretty good. Although I should probably hire a driver. It’s hard to get a good look at a light display while driving.

But the best part is always just driving around and looking. Not thinking about what still needs to be done or anything else, other than just checking out what is right in front of you at the moment. It’s a nice little break from some of the craziness of the season. And we can all use that now and then.
