Francophone health sciences students in Nova Scotia have a chance to get a new scholarship.
It’s being offered by Réseau Santé – Nouvelle-Écosse with support from the Office of the Minister of Acadian Affairs and Francophonie.
Minister Colton LeBlanc says it’s to help support francophone students with their academic careers and reduce barriers.
“My office is providing an initial funding amount of $1,500 to support this pilot and develop this project,” says LeBlanc.
There are three $1,500 scholarships, one at Universite Sainte-Anne, and two at English-language educational institutions.
He says $4,500 per year has been committed over the next three fiscal years.
LeBlanc says this will help with retention of healthcare workers, and help those who want care in French.
“There are more francophones arriving in our province, and in various pockets and communities of our province, there are Acadian demographics and aging demographics that need that care.”
He says having access to French speaking healthcare workers is important to many communities.
