In Favour of Books

I like books. Actually physical books. Some days it doesn’t even matter what book, I’ll still read it. Although I tend to favour your average novel so I don’t have to pay too much attention.

Others in the family have their e-readers. Although they still also use the occasional physical book. But I still think the book has an advantage.

I came across one of those Facebook memes about books this morning. It said “Physical books are tough, hard to destroy, bath resistant, solar operated, feel good in your hand: they are good at being books, and there will always be a place for them.”

I have to agreed with most of that. Maybe not the last part. At least, not completely.

We tend to keep books. Every so often we will go through, find some we may not need or want to read for a fifth time or whatever, and donate them. Making room to fill the available space with more books.

That’s really the only problem I have with books. They hang around. They seem to multiply, continually turning into more of their kind. There are areas of my house that I am starting to think they are taking over. If you try to dig through them, they are likely to fall over and crush you, taking their revenge for disturbing their rest.

But I like them and take comfort in having them around. And they seem very good at keeping the shelves loaded with vinyl albums, CDs and cassettes company. I have a few of those as well.

Space is really the issue. I like having my books and records around. You can’t physically touch them if they are all in the cloud somewhere. Then again, they’re not going to suddenly fall on your head either. Some day I may find a solution. In the meantime, I’ll just keep filling shelves.

Although I may have to do something with the collection of VHS tapes. I have a player. Although it may be buried under a pile of books.
