Soccer Dreams

Canada will play El Salvador tonight in a soccer qualifier. It’s a big deal. Canada could qualify for the World Cup. Not something they have done in a long time. So it is a bit exciting.

I’ll admit, I am a bit of a soccer fan. I played when I was younger. I’m not going to pretend I was any good at it, but I did play and enjoyed the game, which makes it easier to watch. For those who aren’t familiar with soccer, I can see how it would seem rather tedious. And even I’ll admit the players can seem a bit overly dramatic at times.

But most of the world is pretty wrapped up in soccer and it would be nice to have a team at the biggest tournament in the game.

I know. It’s February. It’s hard to get your head around the idea of people playing soccer this time of year, with snow on the ground and animals calling for more winter to come. But a win tonight pretty much guarantees moving on to the World Cup, so it is a big deal.

Soccer is a game pretty much anyone can play. You need a ball. That’s about it. You can add in boots and shin guards if you like, but really, a ball will do it. Which makes it a game people can play pretty much anywhere. This time of year in places like Canada, you may have to move indoors a bit. Or have a friendly plow operator handy to clear a field. Which I suppose is one of the big reasons the game has been a bit slow to develop in this country. But we’re getting there.

Our women’s team won gold at the Olympics. And the men’s team is on the verge of qualifying for the World Cup. It’s a big deal, and a wish them all the best.

Hopefully, we get to move on.
