There are several different kinds of spring.
There is meteorological spring. That starts on the first day of March and runs until the end of May. It comes close to your actual spring, but really starts a little bit early.
Then there is astronomical spring, which is based on the vernal equinox and the angle of the sun and things like that.
And then there is just feels like spring, when we can maybe get out of the heavy coats and run around in the sunshine. That’s the one I keep hoping for.
The first has already arrived, so if you ask a weather expert, spring is here in their world. Another is soon to show up in another couple of weeks. But the third one? That’s anyone’s guess.
There were some hopeful signs a couple weeks ago. Various types of birds were singing. Like the cardinals, they were doing a lot of whistling and the chickadees were talking about cheeseburgers.
I know some people refer to chickadees as cheeseburger birds, but they don’t always talk about cheeseburgers. And it really isn’t a call to break out the barbecue, although it could be a hopeful sign. From what I can understand, when chickadees start talking about cheeseburgers, it’s kind of like date night.
Like I say, a couple weeks ago, on one of those warmer days that seemed very spring like, the birds seemed to be thinking maybe spring was on the way. On Saturday, even though it was a fairly nice day, they did not seem to be getting quite so excited.
I’ve heard a lot of people saying they are pretty much done with winter. I’m not so sure winter is done with us. Although there do seem to be some hopeful signs. At least the temperatures over the next few days are looking hopeful.
But the snow still on the ground makes it tough to see any new green shoots popping up. Not that they are likely to be. However I hope things continue to get bit warmer over the coming days. April 1, and the opening of fishing season isn’t far away. It’s hard to dig worms when there’s snow on the ground.
Maybe if those birds would just sing a bit more they would encourage the weather to change. But it probably doesn’t work that way.
