Seeing The Lights

Every so often, we get the chance to see the northern lights around here. It’s usually not an every day thing, but it does happen.

There were reports they might have been visible over the past weekend. Maybe Saturday night. Saturday night was not a good night to stand outdoors looking up at the sky. First, you could get really wet. Second, standing up was a chore in itself Saturday night in that wind. So I sort of forgot all about checking for colours in the sky. Well… it was more of a “not going out in that type” of thing.

I never gave it another thought. Now today, I see someone posting pictures of the northern lights they took last night.

It’s one of those things. Most times when we hear there might be something interesting to see in the night sky, clouds immediately move in. It’s like they know. The clouds just come by and say, “Nothing to see here. May as well go inside.” I guess maybe I should stop believing them.

I have seen them before. But they are always different. And always a treat. Not like we live up north and they are just hanging around all the time. They only come by occasionally.

But truthfully, I never even thought of looking up last night. There may be a chance tonight, but clouds are supposed to be moving in. Maybe even a light dusting of snow tonight and through parts of tomorrow. Sort of an early Sheila’s Brush, since there doesn’t seem to be much in the forecast just after St. Patrick’s Day.

I’m not sure if the lights will be on tonight. For the life of me I can’t really figure out the northern lights forecasts you find online. But if I happen to let the dog out later tonight, I think I’ll make a point of looking up and toward the north.

You just never know.
