Bridgewater’s Cornwallis Street to become Crescent Street.

Cornwallis Street in Bridgewater will soon see a new name.

At a regular meeting, council voted to change the name to Crescent Street — a name suggested during the public consultation process.

Council opted to change the name to Crescent Street because Cornwallis Street currently abuts Crescent Street.

As well, the name Crescent Street already exists in the Provincial database and will make the changeover easier for emergency services.

The name change has been in the works since 2020, when council got a petition with 793 signatures to change the name because of Edward Cornwallis’ violent colonial legacy.

A current by-law means civic numbers need to be continuous. So, people living on the existing Crescent street will be issued new civic numbers.

Trusty Street was also considered as an option.
