The One Shoe Mystery

I have no idea how this happens. But it does happen. And it seems to happen fairly often.

How does one shoe, or boot, end up abandoned on the side of the highway in seemingly random places? I saw one the other night, and started thinking about it.

You probably seen them. I know I have and I can’t for the life of me think of a good explanation.

Does someone stop, put one shoe on top of the car and drive off and forget they left it there? Do they just chuck one shoe out at highway speed, letting it land where they will? Does the shoe, in a desperate attempt to escape, leap from the moving car, hoping to make a run for it?

I have never been able to figure it out. But there always seems to be a random boot or shoe laying beside the highway, longing for it’s mate.

On rare occasions you may see two. At times you may see a pair, tied together, draped over a power line. Probably left by a crow on his way home from playing basketball with his crow friends and he just happened to forget where he left his sneakers on the way home. At least I like to think that.

But the lone shoe puzzles me. It always has. If one was going to make a break for it, wouldn’t it tell it’s buddy, so they could make a run for it together? Or if you were going to throw it away, wouldn’t you toss both?

It will probably forever remain a mystery. In the meantime, I’ll continue to drive down the highway, seeing the occasional one show or boot, trying to imagine what it’s story might be.

Just a lone shoe. Out on it’s own. Travelling the highways of Nova Scotia.
