A Day To Read Tolkien

I did not know such a day existed, but tomorrow is Tolkien Reading Day.

I know a lot of people may be thinking that something like that sounds a bit too nerdy, but I have been a Tolkien fan for quite some time. I was probably still in my teens when I first discovered the Lord Of The Rings. Then had to go back and read the Hobbit. Then a few other books he had written.

Reading the books has always been a bit of an adventure. I read them. I almost made my children read them. And they have read them to their children. Sure there are movies, but it’s not the same. Yes, a good story is a good story, but Tolkien had a way with words that has stuck with me and a lot of others over the years.

And there are still things he wrote that I have not read. A few that were put together and published after his death, which always makes me a bit wary. But still, maybe I should give them a try.

But March 25 is the day picked to read something by J. R. R. Tolkien. Why March 25th? That’s the day Frodo tossed the ring into the volcano and defeated Sauron. At least the supposed date of a fictional event. Although if you know of any rings of power and happen to have a volcano handy, it might be worth tossing it in. Could solve a lot of the world’s problems. You never know.

But in any case, Tolkien created a fantasy world that has been loved by a lot of people for many years. If you are a fan, or ever have been, maybe pick up one of his books just for the fun of it tomorrow.

We can all use a little escape from reality now and then.
