Town Of Shelburne Marks 115th Birthday

The Town of Shelburne is celebrating a milestone.

On April 4th, 1907, Shelburne was officially incorporated as a town, making today as the town’s 115th birthday.

Shelburne was founded in 1783, when settlers arrived from New York and other areas of the eastern United States.

Before that, the Mi’kmaq used the area for summer encampments.

Over 1,000 Black Loyalists also arrived, and settled on the northwestern arm of Shelburne Harbour, creating Birchtown.

At one time, Shelburne’s population was higher than 10,000, even more than Halifax, but it dwindled to about 300 by the 1820s.
