To Mow Or No

I thought about it. And it’s only the first part of the month. But my lawn is already starting to look pretty long.

We might complain that spring weather has been slow in coming this year, but what I think has been missing is heat. Days have not been overly warm. But they haven’t been overly cold either. And they have also been pretty damp.

I have been noticing for the past week or more that there are several different types of blooms and flowers that are getting ready to pop out, and probably are with this bit on sunshine we’re having this week. One thing we haven’t been getting much of this year is frost. The last couple years we have had frost warnings up until the first part of June. We might not be getting lay in the sun and get a tan type of weather, but we haven’t been seeing much of that cool things off until they stop growing type weather either.

And then when we add in the damp weather. it seems the plant life likes the combination cooler temperatures and moisture. At least in my yard.

The past couple of years, I have tried to do the No Mow May thing, letting the dandelions have the run of the lawn so various little critters have something to eat in the first part of the year. But that lawn really seems to be jumping up this year.

While I am certainly in favour of bees and want to help them, I’m also not big on having a hay field in the back yard. Mostly because I do not have the equipment to process it. It’s not really a big enough back yard to be able to make a living selling hay. So there are limits to how high I can let it grow.

I know some people get concerned about ticks. We certainly have no shortage, but they will probably be there no matter what you do. It’s just a matter of how high they will be able to catch a ride.

I’m going to try. But No Mow May may be Mow a Little May. Just to keep things in check.
