The Downside of Spring

I haven’t been spending a lot of time concentrating on them, but it seems like the bugs are about to begin. It won’t be much longer.

Over the weekend, I started to notice there were small black dots circling. They didn’t seem too interested in biting just yet. In fact, they almost seemed a bit confused as to why they were there. But it won’t take long. A couple nice days will be all it takes.

And I guess it is getting to that time of year. I noticed a few mayflies starting to hatch over the weekend. And I have seen the odd mosquito, as well. But so far, nothing that has been trying to remove the blood from my body.

There are a number of different ways to deal with them. There are those lucky people that just don’t seem as attractive to insects, and they seem to leave them alone. I don’t suite know why, and I am not one of those people.

But you can use things with scent. Oil of citronella and other similar type things seem to work okay. At least until the bugs get really hungry. Chemical deterrents, like DEET can work well. You can get clothing that has a chemical in them that will keep insects from biting. Or you can just run away and stay inside.

I don’t do the last one. I like the outside. I’m even not all that adverse to donating bodily fluids to feed others. I, however, am not in favour of the itching that seems to come with the process. And there are limits to how much blood I’m willing to donate.

And as much as I really don’t like covering my body with chemicals, they also seem to keep the ticks at bay, and I’d really like to keep clear of them.

But it’s only for a few weeks each year. I, and many others, will find a way to cope without running for cover.

I really wished I knew how to make myself taste bad to a bug.
