Confusing The Cat

I think my cat was a bit upset with me last night. Maybe because I was laughing at her. She looked upset. But she has one of those faces.

She was chasing bees. On television.

I was watching a show about bees, which was pretty interesting. I had no idea how many different kinds of bees there were and how different they all are. So I didn’t notice at first that the cat was also paying attention.

Up until this point, I had never notice her pay any attention whatsoever to the television. She would be more likely to get upset that you were paying attention to that stupid screen instead of doing import things, like feeding the cat, or petting the cat, or something involving the cat. Because that’s how cats are.

But I noticed that she jumped up beside the television and seemed to be watching the movement on the screen. Then, she started swatting at the bees. She would sit and watch, and every so often, whack the TV with her paw of a bee got too close. She seemed a bit upset that she was not able to catch these creatures that were right there in front of her. What sort of sorcery was I trying to pull here? And the fact I found her antics rather amusing also seemed a bit annoying.

At one point, when a couple of bees flew off the screen, she seemed to decide they must have gone behind. So she walked behind the television, trying to find the bees. No luck. They seemed to have gotten away.

The dog meanwhile, was just laying there, not willing to fall for that again. She had learned a few years ago that things on that infernal machine just seem to disappear. She had actually been watching crows on television, and when one flew off the screen, spent several minutes with her head behind the television trying to figure out where it went. She never found it, and seemed to lose interest in the TV in general.

The cat seemed a bit more determined. She appeared from behind the screen and gave the television a couple more swats before finally giving up.

I really am not concerned this behavior will be repeated outside. Because bees are fairly quick, a lot of the footage was in slow motion. I think real bees would likely be far too fast for her. And if she did manage to get close to a real bee, it would probably only take one to get the message across that cats should not mess with bees. Especially the pointy end.

But it was rather interesting. Both shows. The one on bees and the one put on by the cat.

And it does make me wonder what she watches when I’m not home.
