South Shore Scrap and Metal in Chester Basin caught fire after an explosion late last night.
Blockhouse, Mahone Bay, Martins River, Chester, Chester Basin and Western Shore fire departments were deployed.
Fire Chief Ira Sawler says the building is quite large and was engulfed when they arrived on the scene.
“The fire came out through the backside of the roof. It originated in a backroom and it came up through the roof,” said Sawler.
Highway 3 was closed for a few hours overnight.
The cause of the explosion and fire is unknown.
