Zika Virus Not A Major Threat In Nova Scotia

Nova Scotians shouldn’t worry about the Zika virus.

Dr. Robert Strang, Chief Medical Officer for Nova Scotia, says only one in five people who contract the disease show symptoms.

He adds there is an added risk for pregnant women heading to the Caribbean.

“They may want to reconsider whether they should be traveling at this time,” he says, “because of the possible links with problems with brain development in the fetus.”

Strang says there’s no real evidence showing the virus is transmitted person to person.

He says make sure you pack bug spray and long-sleeve shirts if you’re planning a trip south.
