Low Cost Meals When I Was Growing Up

I remember the things that were in our pantry when I was a kid.

I get a feeling that my parents had a super strict budget for groceries.

We always had those humongous bags of puffed wheat that were called Puffs or Fluffs for breakfast cereal.

And you had to use powdered milk on it.

Back then sandwiches were either PB&J or those canned meats like Klik and Kam. (basically Canadian spam)

That was also when bologna was inexpensive.

Mom would stretch a little bit of hamburger a long way by mixing it with rice and tomato soup and calling it Spanish Rice.

When I got out on my own I would buy a big bag of macaroni elbows and throw those in a bowl of tomato soup,

Pancakes or spaghetti were other cheap favourites.

Hot dogs or grilled cheese sandwiches were another inexpensive meal.

I never got into ghoulash or Mr Noodles.

Hamburger Helper or Tuna Helper were never on my grocery list.

What were the low cost meals you ate when you were a kid or first out on your own?
