The Other Part of Back To School

It has started. Children headed back to school. In some cases, maybe moving off on their own for the first time. It’s a pretty exciting time of year for many of them. And we have to try to remember the traffic rules we haven’t used for a couple months.

Not passing a school bus with red lights flashing is an easy one to remember. At least for many of us. There might be a few who need to remind themselves. There are always those moments when you might not realize you have to come you a stop because of a bus. That two month gap without them on the road can take some getting used to.

Probably a good rule of thumb is if you see a big yellow vehicle, be ready to stop. Sure, you might end up stopping for the odd dump truck, but better to be safe.

And the school zone speed limits seem to confuse people quite often. It shouldn’t be confusing, but different speed zones don’t help. In a 50 kph zone, slow to 30 kph for a school zone. In a zone with a higher posted limit, slow to 50 kph. And yes, that “when children present” part seems to get some people. So just pretend they are always present. Again, better to be safe.

It can be an exciting time for all of us as the kids head back to school. And they’re not the only ones who can get distracted. So please, keep everyone safe.

With school back in, all of us need to pay a bit more attention.
