Easy To Overheat

I broke down over the weekend. I put a fire on. Not a big fire. Just a little something to take the edge off. The combination of the north wind on Saturday and the rain on Sunday sort of made me do it. And it was more the dampness than the cold. But I needed a bit of heat.

The problem this time of year is you get a bit of a chill in the air, but it’s not really cold enough to truly crank up the heat. So you have to be a bit cautious. Especially with a wood fire.

It doesn’t take much, but it is easy to overdo it. You toss on a couple logs, just to take a bit of the chill off. But if you put on one too many, suddenly you’re sitting around with all the windows open, trying to cool things down.

I love wood heat, but it’s easy to overdo it this time of year. And once you start, you can’t really stop. With other forms of heat, you just turn them down again. You can’t really do that with wood. I suppose you could grab a flaming log from the fire and run outside with it, but that would be a bit dangerous. Instead, you have to let that one log too many burn down while you sit there sweating it out.

Dampness is hard to control. You need that little blast of heat, just to clear it out. But once it’s gone, you don’t really need much of that heatr anymore.

Staying comfy can be a struggle some days.
