I ran around last evening, trying to get things put away before Fiona arrives. A couple days ago, I wasn’t too concerned. It looked like she would head out to sea. Maybe give us a little rain and some heavy surf, but otherwise leave us alone. But it seems Fiona wasn’t satisfied with a sea cruise. She’s decided to head for land.
So I decided to put things out of harms way. I will admit, over the years I have been a little slack about getting ready for tropical storms around here. They all blow out before they get here. Or maybe not.
Juan helped correct that behavior. Dorian did the same. So I am learning.
I pulled things up pretty good for Juan. I was a bit more relaxed with Dorian, thinking I had made it through a few of those before, so everything should be alright. For the most part I was right. But there were some things that proved me wrong.
I left my boat, with the outboard motor attached, sitting on the beach. Everything survived. Except when I next took the boat for a little run I discovered I no longer had reverse. Reverse comes in handy some time. So not paying attention to a storm cost me money. That got my attention.
So I went around picking things up last night. My hummingbird feeder was still out. I haven’t seen a hummingbird since Saturday. They all seemed to leave by Sunday, probably knowing a storm was heading this way and wanting to get out of the way themselves. I got that in. A set of wind chimes. Got those down. I had almost forgotten my wasp trap. That was hanging there, so I made sure that was down. And all the larger items like boats and chairs and tables and… let’s say I had a lot of things sitting around outdoors.
But I have those things secured now. I might be a little ahead of things, but it wasn’t raining and it wasn’t too windy so it seemed like a good time to get everything done.
We still have some time left. Nail it down before it flies away. That would be my suggestion.
