Today is one of those days. There are a lot of thing that just sort of work together today.
First, it is Calan Gaeaf. That’s kind of a Welsh version of Halloween and a harvest festival rolled into one. But you really have to start the night before with a big bonfire, and throw rocks into it to see if you’ll make it through the next year. Since I didn’t do that last night, we’ll hold off on that one until next year.
But there are several things that seem to go together. Like Cook For Your Pets Day, Men Make Dinner Day and Calzone Day, all on the same day.
The fact that someone saw fit to put cook for your pets day and men make dinner day on the same day seems just a tiny bit insulting. I like to think I can cook quite well. I’m also one of those people who enjoy reading cookbooks and trying new recipes, just for the fun of it. And just because pets may also enjoy my cooking does not mean it isn’t fit for human consumption. I will admit there might be the odd time when things don’t quite work out, but most times what I end up creating in the kitchen is pleasing to man and beast alike.
But then we can throw the third part in there. Calzone Day. Supposedly, the calzone was invented centuries ago in Naples, Italy as a way to make pizza more portable. I mean, it’s really a folded pizza, sealed around the edges, so you can just walk and eat at the same time. Very convenient.
So if you can make a homemade pizza, you should be able to turn that into a calzone. And as long as you pay attention to the toppings… or stuffings, I guess, in the case of a calzone… you should be able to share with your pets.
So I think I should be able to put this all together. I might have missed out on Calan Gaeaf and throwing rocks into a bonfire (I’m going to try to remember it for next year), I can still celebrate a couple things at once today. Three actually. I can cook calzones for dinner. Even make one for the dog.
Just hold the mushrooms.
