Did You Make It?

I has long been a goal many aspire to, but we rarely make it. And judging from the forecast, we could make it a bit further still. I’m talking about getting into November without turning the heat on.

I will admit, I did turn mine on a bit. Once or twice. It wasn’t so much the cold, it was the dampness that made me turn the heat on a bit. Just enough to make things feel a bit more comfortable, then it went off again. A few more dehumidifiers around the house may have helped me avoid it, But I still feel pretty good about the whole thing.

But I know there are those who try to hit that goal every year. Can we make November without turning on the heat. Usually, it becomes nearly impossible. But not this year. Sure, we had a couple chilly days, but not so bad you couldn’t bundle up and not turn the heat on.

I’m almost scared to mention this. We will probably pay for it later. But in a year when the cost for heat seems intent on going to greater heights, the longer we can go without using it seems like a good idea.

While there could be negative things associated with weather like we’ve been having lately, I still like it. Although I swear I saw leaves budding out on a couple smaller trees, which could be bad for them. But that’s okay. I can live with a couple naked trees.

I’ve also been watching for signs of what the winter may bring. I saw one wooly bear caterpillar that seemed to indicate a moderate winter. The stripes seemed to all be pretty even. But it had been run over by a car. I’m not sure what that means. There doesn’t seem to be much in the folklore dealing with flat caterpillars.

And wasp nests have been all over the place. Some were high in the trees. Others will built into the ground. Seems like even they are confused by the weather.

There isn’t much we can do about it, either way. But it feels good hitting November without having to crank the heat up.
