Nova Scotia will soon be ready to recruit over hundred new doctors who trained overseas.
“We need more healthcare providers, and we are working hard to welcome those who have trained outside Canada but want to make Nova Scotia their home,” said Health and Wellness Minister Michelle Thompson. “This program will help internationally trained doctors adjust to practicing in Nova Scotia, which means they’ll be able to better support the patients who need them.”
The government is investing $1.3 million in a new orientation program, developed by the College of Surgeons and Physicians called Welcome Collaborative, that will soon launch.
It will help support and mentor 140 doctors trained abroad to settle in Nova Scotia over the next three years.
There was a pilot program held in October with eight newly licensed doctors. The hope is to have the program last long term.
It’s part of the government’s Action for Health plan to improve healthcare in our province.
