Maybe It Matters Who Makes It

We probably all know a picky eater. There are people who like things a certain way or don’t like certain foods. I’ve never really been that way, but there are those who are. One such person is one of my grandchildren.

He is getting better and expanding his menu somewhat. But there are times it gets a bit frustrating. I once had chicken nuggets rejected for being the wrong shape. Not being a nugget connoisseur, I’m not sure what the issue was. I can see not having the right type of sauce to dip in, but that wrong shape? That one confused me.

Last night we were having a family dinner, so I decided to go with something I felt was fairly safe. A home made pizza. I know pizza is relatively safe, but being home made meant it was going to be a different shape. So I wasn’t falling for that one. So I got him to help make it.

I looked after the spreading of the dough and that sort of thing. After that, it was hand him the ingredients and let him build his own. There may even have been a topping or two I didn’t expect that went on his pizza. But he was the one making it. And as I explained, if he didn’t like it, it was on him.

But he did a good job. A little extra sauce, a little extra cheese. Both of his choice. Especially the cheese. He carefully explained to me that there really is no such thing as too much cheese. In happen to agree, but he was obviously thinking about what he was building. And not only that, the finished product disappeared. That’s the part I really liked.

But it seemed like a pretty good idea. Give him control over his own food. Granted, we were starting with something he likes anyway, so that was an advantage. But he seemed very willing to dive into the finished product because he had a hand in making it.

Maybe I can teach him how to grill a steak.
