North Atlantic Right Whale Disentangled From Canadian Gear

A North Atlantic Right Whale was caught in Nova Scotian fishing gear recently.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says marine mammal rescue responders in the U.S. disentangled ‘Argo’ during the last weekend of January.

The gear was from Lobster Fishing Area 33, which extends from Shelburne to Halifax.

DFO says it’s the first North Atlantic right whale entanglement connected to Canadian lobster gear in five years.

They say the harvester did report the missing gear as required.

Another whale was disentangled from fishing gear on January 21st, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the origin of the gear.
