What’s On Your Windshield

I usually like to wait for my car to warm up a bit and let the windows clear by themselves, rather than jump out and start scraping. But this morning I was in a bit of a hurry. So I went digging for a card.

Sure, there are things that are actually built as window scrapers. I’ve found most of them don’t work all the well. The problem being some windows are flat, and some are gently curved. While most all scrapers are flat. So they tend to not fit that well on the gently curved windows. Like the windshield of a car.

So you’re left scraping the same spot over and over again, trying the move the scraper just enough that it will make contact with that last strip of frost that you want to get off the window.

I have a scraper. It doesn’t work well. There is also a longer handled scraper that is built into the end of my snow brush I keep in the car. It doesn’t work very well either.

What I find does work well? Old cards. Not playing cards. More like credit cards. Only you probably don’t want to use an actual credit card. But most of us have outdated customer loyalty cards and used up gift cards that aren’t much use for their intended purpose. They do make great window scrapers though.

I usually keep a stack of the things in the car for just such a purpose. They are stiff enough to scrap, but flexible enough to bend to the curve of the windshield. And it’s not like there a shortage of them.

Whenever I use up a gift card and the cashier tries to toss it away, I usually ask for it back. To use as a scraper. Yes, they will wear out and crack, but there are always more. And we certainly don’t have room to carry them all around with us.

So I keep a little stack of them in the car, held together by a clip. They come in handy on those frosty mornings.
