Time To Buy All The Milk and Bread

It’s one of those things that I understand, yet at the same time I don’t understand. The need to stock up before a storm.

This morning I noticed there seemed to be a bit more traffic around. Then it hit me. There is a snow storm in the forecast. Everyone has to stock up before the storm.

I understand the need for storm chips. And maybe an extra bag, just in case. But I’ve never quite understood the big rush before a storm. Sure, you should have a little extra on hand, just in case. And yes, I’ve seen the amount of milk my grandchildren can consume in the run of one day, so a bit extra may be needed. But the magic trick of making all the essentials disappear from store shelves in the hours before a storm always mystifies me a bit.

Maybe it’s the fact I work in a job that doesn’t get snow days. There are very few days I haven’t made it to work. I think White Juan was one of them. But when you have a storm like that, staying out of it makes sense. Most snow storms, I dog myself out and head to work. It just never occurs to me that others wouldn’t be doing the same.

But because of that, I’ve never really been a stock up ahead of a storm sort of person. I make sure I have enough to get through a couple days if it is needed, but try not to get too carried away.

It surprises me to see shelves cleaned out before a storm. I start to question if I have somehow missed the end of the world or the zombie apocalypse.

Then again, if it was zombies there would still be milk. They’d go straight for the brains. So I should be safe.
